Dear Sir
I have at length rented your farm (after a great deal of hard trading which keep me I think a day and a half) to Wm Poague for one year for $60, which was the best price I could get & upon the whole I think it as much as he can afford to give under the present propects for money gets scarcer daily & produce will scarcely bring Cash at any price. Wm Poague has paid Me one Hundred dollars which is all the cash I have Collected as yet Though I think I will get more before Mr. Craig Leaves this Country as I understand he is not to return before some time in april next I saw your Brother James on Monday Last he & his family was then well James Expects to go to virginia about the first of May & he thinks it would be adviseable for me to send to you, by him what Money I may Collect If this should meet your wishes you will please write to that Effect otherwise I shall send it by Craig. John Rice has never Called on me for any Money. My Brother writes me he has not as yet paid you $50.00 as he promised I have this day wrote to him to pay you Immediately if he should, please let me know it
I saw your sister [Rose?] a few days ago she was then well and as far as I am informed your acquaintances are generally well Nothing to Complain of but the scarcity of Cash & high water.
It is probably my Brother May want a little [duning?] if you see him at least give him one [pinch?] with sentiments of respect I remain your friend & obedient serv.
(signed) S. Thornburgh
(then up left margin...) There is at this time ten Candidates for the Leg[ illegible] & I must confess that I am [illegible] enough to be one of the number (initials) S.T.
