James E. Cheek President

February 12, 1968

Dear Mr. Bond:

During the period of April 20 to April 23, the Student Council of Shaw University will sponsor and host a conference involving Negro students from across the nation.

This conference which has been given the title "Congress for the Unity of Black Students (CUBS) will address itself to the issues which currently confront Negroes in their continued efforts to achieve genuine equality in America. The theme for the conference is "Unity Is Our Most Important Power; Greater Power through Greater Unity."

Hopefully, out of this five day deliberation will emerge the basis for unifying black students all over America, as well as some instruments and mechanics for unifying all black Americans.

The Student Council Planning Committee and all others have unanimously requested me to extend to you an invitation to deliver the keynote (and, therefore, major) address on Saturday, April 20, at 8:00 p.m.

Although this is a completely student sponsored movement, and therefore on a limited budget, we shall offer you the honorarium you require in addition to your travel expenses.

I am sure you agree with me that there is very much needed some inner directed movement among our students for their continued involvement in seeking a redress of the balance in a manner and mode consistent with the aspirations and hopes of Negro Americans. Our students are prepared to do this, and are enlisting the support and participation of their counterparts all across the nation.

It is expected that all 120 Negro colleges and representatives will be well represented at this conference. We also expect a large number of other people who share the aspirations and goals of the students.

Mr Julian Bond 2 February 12, 1968

We should hope to be able to publish the program soon for early circulation, and to list your name as the keynote speaker, as soon as these plans are made public. Your early response to this invitation is, therefore, appreciated. We certainly hope you will be able to accept and lend both wisdom and inspiration to these endeavors.

Very truly yours,

[signed]

The Honorable Julian Bond 162 Euharlle Street, S.W. Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Dr Cheek:

I would be appy to come to Shaw on April 20th. [illegible] I would required round-trip air transportation in advance, overnight hotel or motel accommodations, and a fee of $300.00.

I hope these arrangements suit your committee.

Sincerely,
