Hon. Julian Bond The House of Representatives Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Julian:

It was good to hear from you and learn of the Payton and Clayton campaigns. However, the full name of the Natkonal Committee is the National Committee for Free Elections in Mississippi; thus far we have taken no responsibility for candidates running outside of Mississippi. Indeed, with the confused state of politics in Mississippi and fund raising problems generally, it has been all we could handle to do a moderate job in Mississippi. In any case, I think that it might be possible to get people to work on the campaigns in South Carolina and North Carolina. But it would depend on timing, of course, and on whether or not there is competition from the national campaign. I don't know whatever happened to John O'Neal's project to organize people who have "graduated" from the movement, but certainly that mailing list could be used to solicit help and contacts for obtaining help: John has facilities for working on this.

I hope to see you when next you are in New York - perhaps for dinner, or at least drinks.

Sincerely yours,

[signed]

Dear Ealnor Eleanor:

Thanks for the tip about John O'Neal. I'll try him, although what I was hoping for was an "in" to student age people, folks who could do for Payton wasdone for McCarthy in New Hampshire.

But John may be able through his contacts to turn some money into Payton's campaign.

Thanks again
