SOUTHEASTERN REGIONAL OFFICE Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith 41 Exchange Place, S. E. -- 523-3391 -- Atlanta, GA. 30303

July 18, 1968

The Honorable Julian Bond Southern Regional Council 5 Forsyth St., N.W. Atlanta, Georgia 30303

Dear Mr. Bond:

On May 23, 1968, you were invited to attend a meeting at the Atlanta headquarters of Camp Blue Star.

The much respected professional directors of the camp are Harry and Herman Popkin, who have always been community-minded. The Popkins were moved by the death of Dr. Martin Luther King to give impetus and substance to a plan they have long had -- to provide a camping experience for young people from the over-all community representing a cross section of racial, cultural, religious and economic backgrounds. Their proposal is to hold the program for a two week period, beginning in the summer of 1969. They will make a number of scholarships available so that the entire community can be represented.

The Popkins asked the assistance of the Anti-Defamation League in bringing together a committee of community leadership who could serve in an advisory capacity in both selecting campers and preparing for the success of "Camping Unlimited".

The ADL submitted names representative of our over-all community. Yours was among them. A very exciting initial meeting was held. Plans are underway for the next meeting to be held at the camp's facilities in Hendersonville, N.C., so "on-the-scene" the committee can continue with planning.

Before invitations to this meeting are extended, would you be good enough to phone me, indicating whether you wish to serve on this committee? This would be a labor of love, drawing upon your experience in the community and not imposing great hardship on your time.

Sincerely, [signed] Betty Cantor Mrs. Betty Cantor Community Consultant
