Hon. Julian Bond 162 Euhnlee Street Atlanta, Georgia 30314

Dear Julian:

Now that some of the shouting has stopped, I wanted to say how much I enjoyed working with you at the Democratic National Convention. Everyone seems agreed that the outstanding accomplishments of the Convention were the abolition of the unit rule and passage of the democratic selection amendment to the rules and the seating of your delegation and I am proud that I was able to contribute to these accomplishments.

We were all especially pleased at the attempted symbolic nomination of you as vice president; eight years from now we can drop the symbolism.

I hope you will let me know when you are coming to New York so we can continue our friendship. In the interim, keep me in mind if you need anything done here.

Cordially, [signed] Bob Robert A. Meister

[Bond's draft response]:

Dear Bob:

I'm glad you wrote so I get a chance to write to thank you for your help. The support that you, Joe Rarur, Alton Harris and all of the McCarthy people gave us was the push that got us as far as we did manage to go.

We are only sorry that we didn't get a chance to go on further and to offer McCarthy the same kind of support he gave us.

I will try to keep in touch; you do the same.
