AIR MAIL - SPECIAL DELIVERY

The Honorable Julian Bond c/o American Programming Bureau 59 Temple Place Blake Building Boston, Massachusetts 02111

Dear Julian:

In scheduling your day in Philadelphia, we are encountering a multitude of problems. We have at this time been given three different time schedules for your trip.

As per your conversation with my secretary, Mrs. Boyd, and Mr. Simon of my office, we learned that you were addressing LaSalle College day students at 12:00 p.m. and the evening students at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30th. You asked that we confirm this with Mrs. Baldwin, your secretary.

Mrs. Baldwin, however, told us that she knows nothing of your schedule ad that you are now booking your speaking engagements and traveling arrangements through the America Programming Bureau in Boston.

In conversations with Mr. Walker and his staff of APB, my secretary was assured that you were arriving in Philadelphia at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30th and leaving Philadelphia at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 31st. He gave us assurance that anything we could arranged with LaSalle for this time period would be acceptable and that we could then schedule other appearances for you in the Philadelphia area.

The first schedule was given by you personally; the second was given to us by Mr. Walker and today we received a third schedule; namely, that you would be available to us only from 2:00 p.m. through 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30th -- or until your LaSalle College appearance--and that you were leaving Philadelphia first thing Thursday morning, October 31st.

In accordance with our initial conversation with Mr. Walker we have arranged a schedule--copy of which is attached--and LaSalle has expressed their acceptance of this schedule. We have been making plans for a reception and dinner in your honor with two speeches on Wednesday and on Thursday morning a motorcade and two rallies in the North Philadelphia area enroute to LaSalle to address their day students.

Because of the confusion, we are completed stymied.

We don't know if you are avaliable for the reception and dinner and the time of your arrival as now given to us by Boston does not coincide with any airplane schedules.

From our understanding, your departure Thursday morning would be in violation of your contractual arrangements with LaSalle to address both their day and evening student bodies.

At this moment, it is impossible for us to proceed until we have complete clarification and know exactly what time you will arrive in Philadelphia and how long you intend to stay here. We will do everything in our power to utilize your time to the maxium if we can only have confirmation of your exact schedule.

Please call me upon receipt of this letter as time of the essence and we are most anxious to make your visit to Philadelphia as fruitful and as valuable as possible.

Sincerely,

Milt
