Allen for Congress FIFTH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT OF NEW JERSEY MORRIS - SOMERSET COUNTIES 351 WOODLAND ROAD MADISON, N.J. 07940 (201) 377-9240

September 27, 1968

Honorable Julian Bond Georgia State Senator 361 Lee Street Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Julian:

I don't expect that you will remember me out of the thousands of faces you encountered in Chicago but I was one of the two Black McCarthy Delegates with the New Jersey Contingent. We tried desparately to put forth an enlightened point of view but it was not to be and that is history.

You told me in Chicago to call on you for help, and if you could you would try to assist. I am now imposing on our short friendship. We here in the 5th congressional district are opposing the incumbent (R) Peter B. Freylinghuysen with a man of integrity, peace and understanding of the problems that divide our nation. I am enclosing Dr. Allen's biographical sketch. He needs help. We must capture the sentiment of the Black Community and the independents. We feel that a public appearance here by you would do much to accomplish our purposes. We are aware of your plans to be in Newark, New Jersey, on Monday, October 21, 1968, and hope that you could help us on a day or two preceeding that date or following it. We are prepared to assume any expense in this endeavor.

I know that I do not have to go into details concerning the importance of electing men of vision in the mold of Senator McCarthy to positions of high office. For this reason we concerned Democrats beg you to try to make some favorable arrangement of your schedule for us.

I would like to offer to you my encouragement for the tremendous responsibility you share in the new politic, the politic of humanism which has so long been absent in the halls of government.

You may call me collect at Code 201, 267-2864, after 6:00 p.m., or during the day at Code 201, 386-8146.

We shall anxiously await your reply and I know that some day "We Shall Overcome".

Sincerely yours, [signed] S. Lloyd Newberry S. Lloyd Newberry Chairman, Campaign Committee
