Dear Mr. DuBois,

I am very sorry I was not able to answer your kind letter of invitation before the date you mentioned had passed. I have been out of the city a good deal since the Legislature adjourned and since I do not have a secretary, --- it is rather difficult sometimes.

Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience cause by my failure to reply, and hope you will ask me again next year.
