Dear Mr. Mitgang,

I am sorry to be so long in answering your letter. I should like very much to do a guest essay along the lines you suggest. However, I have been on a lecture tour for some weeks, and will be for another two weeks, and I just don't feel I have an essay of any sort in me right now.

Will you ask me again later in the summer or fall, please?
