Dear Mr. Smith,

Mrs. Baldwin has brought your letter to my attention, and told me of your telephone calls.

We have gone over my schedule, and I do not see how it will be possible for me to get to Hartford before the election. We are involved in an election and probably run-off election here in Atlanta, where Black politicians are challenging the office of both Mayor and Vice-Mayor, as well as many Black candidates for Alderman.

I am sorry I cannot come to Hartford, and I do wish you the very best luck in your endeavors.

Sincerely,

Julian Bond
