Mr. J.O. Emmerich Enterprise-Journal McComb, Mississippi 39648

Dear Mr. Emmerich:

I have had the pleasure of working with your late brother Charles Emmerich when he was director of Economic Opportunity Atlanta. I am writing to request that you join with me as a member of the National Development Committee for the Mary Holmes College Fund Development Campaign.

Mary Holmes College of West Point, Mississippi operated as a Junior college up until June, 1969. Beginning with the fall term its students entered into a third year program which represented the first step towards becoming a four-year institution.

As one of the member colleges of the National Board of Missions of the United Presbyterian Church, Mary Holmes has functioned without the benefit of its own Board of Trustees. Also, it has functioned without the benefit of its own independent base for funding. Nevertheless, the college sponsors ten Headstart Centers that are located throughout the state of Mississippi, an adult literacy program in Quitman County, has developed a catfish farming cooperative and it sponsors day care and tutorial programs in West Point, Mississippi. Its students are drawn from throughout the state.

The purpose of the campaign is to generate financial resources for capital improvements, faculty expansion, innovative curriculum reform and for improved library facilities. Our goal is to raise ten million dollars ($10,000,000). The major focus of support is through national corporations with plants that are located in the state of Mississippi, individual gifts and foundation support. We feel that this campaign must involve local Mississippians of your statute. Through your participation our efforts to generate corporate support of the campaign would be greatly enhanced.

I sincerely hope that you will agree to join with me as a member of the National Development Committee of Mary Holmes College.

Sincerely,

Julian Bond
