46. SEED CATALOGUE AND GARDEN GUIDE.

[image] NEW ATLAS PUMPKIN

New Atlas Pumpkin.
What do you think of a pumpkin weighing 300 pounds? It is not an impossibility, as that weight has been exceeded in this variety, which is an improvement on the Mammoth Chili. One specimen shown at the World's Fair is said to have weighed 481 pounds, but such a weight is extraordinary. Our seed is the result of years of selection, and was saved only from the largest sized, perfect shaped specimens, which will be sure to produce enormous fruits if properly grown. It is just the thing for exhibition at fairs, etc., and just think of the enormous weight that can be grown from one seed. Flesh is a rich yellow, very thick, and excellent quality, nutritious and profitable to grow for stock feeding. Keeps well. We have only a small supply of seed this year and can only offer it in packets of ten seeds for ten cents.

A PRIZE OF $10.00 Will be paid for the largest pumpkin grown from our seed this year, the report to be sent in by October 15th. Full directions for growing large specimens sent with each packet.

FROM ONE SEED OF THE ATLAS PUMPKIN received from you I grew one vine which produced four pumpkins. The largest weighed 175 lbs., second 168 lbs., third 138 lbs., fourth 96 lbs., or 577 lbs. in all.--Hardy Hughes, Myrtle Creek, Oregon.
Prize last year was won by Peter Oachs, Mapleton, Minn., on a pumpkin weighing 212 lbs.

Sparks' Earliana Tomato.
The Earliest Large Tomato in the World.
Probably no early tomato introduced in many years has attracted so much attention and has so large a sale as Sparks' Earliana. Early tomatoes are usually very small in size. This valuable new variety originated with George C. Sparks of New Jersey, is not only extremely early, but is remarkable for its large size, handsome shape, and beautiful bright red color. Its solidity and fine qualities are fully equal to many of the best late sorts. Extra early tomatoes are one of the most profitable crops for the market gardener. You will make no mistake in planting Sparks' Earliana. Pkt. 10c, oz. 30c.

Golden Globe Onion.
An improvement on the Yellow Globe and it is the handsomest and best keeping sort that we know of. The bulbs are of uniform size and perfect shape. We consider it the handsomest, most prolific, best keeping and easiest selling, making them the most desirable variety we know of. Pkt. 10c, oz. 20c, ¼ lb. 65c, lb. $1.75.

African Horned Cucumber.
A remarkably curious novelty which is not only an excellent fruit for table use or pickling but is a highly ornamental climbing vine of most luxuriant growth and fine for trellis or screen. It is the fruit, however which is its most curious and distinct feature. It averages when mature about four inches long by 2½ in diameter, and is covered with strong, protruding points or horns. The skin is perfectly smooth and of a very deep dark green. When the fruits ripen they turn a brilliant orange and yellow in speckled and clouded effects, and are then highly ornamental. Pkt. 10c.

Naples Giant Squash.
A novelty from Naples, Italy which is very productive and of immense size. Our cut well illustrates their form. Color dark green outside with very thick orange colored flesh of delicious flavor. They grow to a length of 4 to 6 feet and some specimens weigh over 100 lbs. Seed cavity at one end. It is fine grained, sweet and a good keeper. Sold this year in packets only. Each 10c, 3 pkts. for 25c.

[image] MARKET GARDENERS' BEET

Market Gardeners' Beet.
This is undoubtedly one of the best varieties ever introduced, and it receives much praise from our customers each year. As will be noticed by engraving, it is very symmetrical, with small tap root and but few fibrous roots. Unusually small tops. Although on some soils the Egyptian can be marketed a few days before the Market Gardeners, still within a week it will be found larger than the Egyptian, while it continues to grow until late in the fall, attaining a large size; and making a good eating and selling beet for the winter. One sowing only is necesary [necessary] to produce early beets for market and main crop for winter use, which is not the case with any other variety. Color, deep blood red; fine grained and unsurpassed in quality. Summing it all up, we find in it the best beet for Early Market, the best beet for winter use. Owing to the small tops permitting them to be grown close together, the peculiar shape of the bulb, it is the most profitable beet for the market gardener and for family gardens. Pkt. 5c; oz. 10c; ¼ lb. 25c; lb. 75c.

"Big Tom" Pumpkin.
A greatly improved strain of the common Yankee or Connecticut Field Pumpkin which has been selected up for many years to secure the most uniform type. The vines are strong, vigorous and wonderfully prolific. Fruits average about double the size of the old variety; they are smooth and hard, with reddish orange skin and rich, orange yellow flesh. It is a hardy productive variety which makes excellent pies but is of special value to farmers for feeding cattle and hogs. Makes a profitable crop when grown alone or can be grown among corn with practically no extra expense. Per oz. 10c; ¼ lb. 20c; lb. 60c postpaid. By express or freight, per lb. 40c; 10 lbs. or more @ 35c.
