94. SEED CATALOGUE AND GARDEN GUIDE.

[image] IOWA SEED CO'S NEW BALL BEARING CONQUEROR LAWN MOWER

LAWN SUPPLIES. ALL OF THE BEST QUALITY. NEW BALL BEARING CONQUEROR LAWN MOWER.--For six years past one of the oldest and largest manufacturers has been experimenting to adapt the ball-bearing and other new features to lawn mowers. For two or three years he has put out a few dozen each year to give them a practical test and they have proved wonderfully successful. Two years ago he put them into our hands, and we can now offer our customers by far the best mower ever put on the market. The shaft is extra heavy, bearing four cutting knives, and it runs at a high speed compared to ordinary mowers. This gives it a continuous cut and makes a smoother, cleaner lawn. The wheels are nine inches in diameter, with skeleton rims. It has parallel bearings provided with micrometer adjustment, so that practically it cannot wear out. Stationary knife is of the best cast steel, hardened, tempered and self-sharpening. In all respects it is designed for hard, continuous service, and still the ball-bearings and all parts are so perfectly adjusted that it runs as easy as a bicycle. As will be noticed the handles are a new style made specially for us. If desired we can furnish mowers with the ordinary handles at 50c less. The mowers are warranted, and we are sure will please the most particular. Price for mower cutting 14-inch swath, $6.50; 16-inch, $7.00; 18-inch, $7.40; 20-inch, for large lawns, $7.75.

IRON RESERVOIR VASES.--These are the best vases made for general use, as well as for cemeteries, as they do not require watering oftener than once in ten days. The top part or earth receiver has a tube in the bottom extending down into the water reservoir which is packed with moss or sponges through which the moisture is drawn up into the earth by capillary attraction so that the roots of the plants always have sufficient moisture and are never over watered. Price, $10.00 each; larger size, $20.00.

EUREKA WEED KILLER.--Weeds, grass and moss are a nuisance on gravel and brick walks and driveways. They are easily killed and the walks made bright and clean by using this preparation, one package of which is sufficient when mixed with 25 gallons of cold water to clean 100 square yards. Package 75c, by express. ANT EXTERMINATOR.--Lawns sometimes become infested with ants which disfigure it with unsightly heaps of dirt and kill the grass in spots. Many experiments have been tried to destroy them, with but little success, until the invention of this new preparation which does the work. Per package 50c, or postpaid for 60c. DANDELION PULLER.--A convenient little tool of special value for use on lawns. 50c each. CLIMAX LAWN WEEDER.--A simple and easy working device for removing noxious weeds and plants from lawns. Easily operated and does effective work. The full length is 42 inches, enabling the operator to stand erect. Push the chisel under the plant at an angle that will sever the roots. A slight pull on the trigger brings the grab down which securely holds the plant, lifting it out and leaving only a slight mark. Price, $1.00.

SELF-CLEANING LAWN RAKE.--Best cheap device for raking the lawn. Automatic self-cleaner, keeping the teeth clear, 75c each. GRASS CATCHERS.--The most successful device yet brought out for the purpose. It is easily attached to any make of lawn mower that we know of, and as it fastens to the handle only, it does not in any way interfere with the action of the mower. Our cut shows it adjusted ready for use. It can be almost instantly loosened at the lower end to dump the grass. No. 1, suitable for the 12 or 14-inch low wheel or ordinary lawn mowers, each 50c. No. 2 for 14 or 16-inch high or low wheel, 65c. No. 3 for 16 or 18-inch high or low wheel, 80c. No. 4 for 20-inch high wheel, extra strong, $1.00.

PRESTON LAWN SPRINKLER.--The whirling arms give a beautiful fountain-like appearance and fine spray. One of the most effective sprinklers made. The whirling arms distribute the water evenly, give a fine spray, cover a large circle and make a very attractive appearance on the lawn. The sled arrangement on which it rests makes it easy to move from place to place by pulling the hose. Each $1.35. DUDE HOSE REEL.--It pays to use a reel as it keeps the hose in better shape and saves considerable labor and annoyance. Price 85c. MAGIC NOZZLE.--Sprays or will throw a solid stream. Each 50c.

IOWA CLIPPER LAWN MOWER.--For five years we have sold a great many of these and they gave splendid satisfaction everywhere. It is thoroughly well made, runs easily, does excellent work, cutting smooth and clean. Diameter of drive wheels 8¼ inches. Its cutting bar is solid steel and all parts are of best quality, while its simplicity of construction insures durability and also lessens the cost. By purchasing a large number we are enabled to offer them at wonderfully low prices. Price for mower cutting 12-inch swath $2.75; 14-inch, $3.25; 16-inch, $3.75. EXCELSIOR HORSE LAWN MOWERS.--The best make, 30-inch cut, $80.00; 35-inch cut, $95.00; 40-inch cut, $120.00. FINLAY ROTARY LAWN RAKE.--It does the work of raking and gathering up all loose grass, leaves, twigs and loose litter. It works very rapidly and cleans the lawn thoroughly. Price $12.00. IMPROVED GRASS SHEARS.--An improvement on the ordinary grass or sheep-shears. Has long blades and handle is curved to prevent rubbing knuckles on the ground when using. Each 50c. TURF EDGER.--For trimming borders of walks, drives, etc., to make a square edge. Price 50c each. RUBBER HOSE.--Few realize the great difference there is in the quality of rubber hose. The price ranges from $2.00 to $12.00 per length of fifty feet. The low grades will not stand ordinary water pressure, and are gone in a few days. The most expensive grades are intended only for steam. For general use the grades which we offer this year, are, we believe, superior to any other. We want to warn every one not to leave their hose out in the sun when not in use as the water left in it gets very warm and will rot out the best of hose. SAMPSON RUBBER HOSE.--A high grade of five ply rubber hose. Per coil of 50 feet, $7.50. GREEN LINE COTTON HOSE.--Many persons consider the cotton hose more serviceable than rubber. Per coil of 50 feet, $6.00. DEFIANCE RUBBER HOSE.--(Half inch).--Every year the half inch hose is becoming more popular as it is lighter and easier to handle. Per coil of 50 feet, $5.00. GRASS HOOKS OR SICKLES.--Useful for trimming the edges of lawns, next to fences, around trees, shrubs, etc. Price 25c each or a superior quality for 40c. PEERLESS LAWN FERTILIZER.--Lawn grass is a voracious feeder, and will not thrive and hold its beautiful dark green color and velvety appearance unless it is suitably fed. The lack of this one requisite causes many poor and rusty looking lawns. Do not use barn manure as it is apt to contain objectionable grass seed and noxious weed seeds, which you will have to fight for years to come. It is unpleasant to handle, ill-looking and decidedly odorous and dangerous to health. It cannot be evenly distributed, the result being that one spot is over-nourished while the next is starved. All these objections are obviated by the use of our Peerless Lawn Dressing. It is prepared specially for lawns and is of the best quality, dry, finely pulverized and easy to apply. It possesses in the highest degree and concentrated form those constituents best calculated to nourish the grass, promote its luxuriant growth, and the dark green color so greatly admired. It is not only the most perfect lawn dressing that has been devised, but it is the most pleasant to handle, being practically non-odorous. Being dry and fine it is easy to apply, and imparts a vigorous growth to the grass. In preparing a new lawn, sow 10 to 30 lbs. per 1000 square feet of surface, according to richness of soil, raking it in thoroughly. For a top dressing on old lawns, use half this amount, about 10 lbs. for 1000 square feet of lawn, or 400 lbs. per acre, early in spring. Price per 10 lb. package, 60c; 25 lb. pkg. $1.00; 50 lb. pkg. $1.85; 100 lbs. $3.50; 400 lbs. $12.00.

TOOLS AND IMPLEMENTS. To reduce the cost of gardening it is necessary to have the best tools. PLANET JR. NO. 1, COMBINED DRILL AND CULTIVATOR.--This is the most popular tool we have ever sold. NO. 8, HORSE HOE.--Probably no other cultivating machine is so widely known as the "Planet Jr." Combined Horse Hoe and Cultivator, for it is in use throughout the civilized world. It is so strongly built as to stand incredible strain, yet it is light and easy to handle. The depth is under perfect control by a new lever wheel and patent depth regulator, moved instantly in unison by a single lever, making exact work, steadying the machine and relieving the operator. The reversible side hoes act as plows or hillers, but when turned end for end the tool becomes a genuine horse hoe, working so shallow and so close, without injury to the roots, that an immense amount of hand labor is saved. Price $8.00. MOORE'S GARDENER.--A new tool which proved very satisfactory last year. It is a two-wheeled cultivator with very high wheels so fastened to frame that it is very easy to operate. We know and will guarantee it to be the best harrow on the market.
