VEGETABLE SEEDS

Our stock of vegetable seeds we are sure cannot be excelled either in quality or selection by and firm in the country, as we watch our growing crops with great care, taking pains to isolate and keep pure and true to name. Every variety listed is desirable and has our recommendation. ASPARAGUS

(One ounce will sow forty feet of drill. For asparagus roots, see page 38.)

Asparagus is so easily grown and such a large quantity is produced on a small amount of ground that every garden should contain a bed. A bed ten feet square requiring 50 plants will give an abundant supply for any ordinary family. Soal the seed 4 hours in tepid water; sow early in spring in rows a foot apart; keep clean by frequent weeding and hoeing. Ask for free circular giving instructions for making an asparagus bed.

COLUMBIAN MAMMOTH WHITE.-A new and entirely distinct variety, that produced shoots which are white and stay white as long as fit for use. Is more robust and vigorous in habit, and throws up larger shoots and fully as many as Conover's Colossal, and requires no earthing up in order to furnish the white shoots so much sought after. ARTICHOKE

This vegetable is a great delicacy, highly valued in all parts of Europe, and also one of their most prominent table vegetables in California and other parts of this country. It is a perennial producing the large flower heads, which are the part eaten, the second season and every year thereafter. The young stalks are also sometimes tied and blanched like celery, but they are not equal to the flower heads. Cook like asparagus and serve with cream or butter sauce. Sow seed early in hotbeds or box in the house, and when weather becomes settled transplant in rows four feet apart and two feet in the row. When started early sometimes blooms the first year.

LARGE GREEN GLOBE.-The best variety for general use; buds large; scales green; very thich, fleshy. Pkt. 10c, oz. 35c, 1/4 lb. $1.00.

BORECOLE, or KALE

Is a hardier vegetable than the cabbage; excellent for greens during winter and spring; splendid food for poultry. Cultivate like cabbage.

Of the cabbage family, producing numerous heads on the stem, of most delicious quality, as well as cabbage-like head at the top. Use and cultivate the same as winter cabbage.

BROCCOLI

Growth and habit like the cauliflower, except that it is more hardy, and the heads are not as compact. It is not desirable for warm or dry countries, but is of special value in the north. Cultivate and use the same as Cauliflower.

Two Crops Each Year The high values of land throughout the corn belt make it imperative that we secure greater returns from the acres than have been taken in the past. Farming conditions are changing The corn belt is now almost the only source of supply of marketable live stock. It seems to us that while we may not be able to produce beef, pork, or other meats at any lower cost than at present, we can and should market double the present number of animals from the corn belt area. This simply becomes a question of food supply. The soil offers the method by which the returns from our corn fields are practically doubled. These are being erected by thousands throughout the middle west, but we are not making the same progress in increasing the returns from our lands planted to crops other than corn. Every field in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma, which is now in small grain is capable of producing yet another crop this year. Even the corn fields can be made to furnish greater crops by intelligent planting of rape, cow peas, or other seeds at last cultivation.

In this midsummer catalogue we have endeavored to furnish information about a number of items that may be utilized as second crops, and have also listed such items as winter wheat, rye, etc., which are planted in the fall for crops next year. Diversified farming has been advocated in the Agricultural press for many years, but to our mind the result has been very disappointing, because so few items are really raised on the average farm when a dozen different crops now but little grown, would be found desirable and profitable, and might be produced with only the labor cost on lands cultivated in the regular rotation system.

We have not space in this booklet to do more than give general directions for the growth of the various crops listed, but we believe our farmer friends may readily grasp the advantages offered by the use of Rape, Cane, Cow Peas, Sweet Clover, Crimson Clover, Millet, Buckwheat, or Turnips all of which will produce a crop if planted after July First.

We want also to increase the yield of your regular crops and offer you the choicest seed of Winter Wheat, Rye, Alfalfa, Timothy, Etc, that you may increase your production by sowing only strong, pure and vital seeds. It does not pay to sow ordinary seed any more than it does to raise scrub animals.

We wish to thank all our customers for their patronage this season. Our friends have shown their confidence in our house by greatly increased orders, and have taxed our capacity to its utmost. Our real effort this season has been to secure the stocks suitable to our trade in sufficient quantity, as the orders seemed to come without effort on our part. It is not only unsurpassed, but unequaled in hardiness, producing an excellent crop in Minnesota. The straw is stiff enough to hold up the heavy heads well. It has a record of OVER FIFTY-NINE BUSHELS PER ACRE under favorable circumstances; other crops range from thirty to forty bushels under very ordinary conditions. It stools out the best of any variety we know; heads are of good size and a great many ot them to each root. The grains are plump, handsome and quite hard; the hull is reasonably thin and it makes a most excellent grade of flour. Many millers claim that it is fully equal to the world famed Hungarian flours made from the choicest wheat grown in Hungary and Bohemia.

Turkish Red Winter Wheat originated from a few seeds of wheat which were brought to this country from Turkey in a shipment of rye. It looks very much like rye when growing, and is just as hardy as any variety of rye. It has been selected and improved from year to year until it is beyond comparison in value, for farmers in this section of the country, and has established the fact that it most decidely does pay to grow winter wheat Iowa.

During the past few years many new varieties of winter wheat from the east, north, south and west have been tested in Iowa, but in spite of eloquent descriptions, high testimonials and great records in other sections, they either winter kill, blight or rust so as to be worthless. Notwithstanding all the failures of other sorts, Defiance has proved to be invincible, and every year with only one exception (season of 1898-99, when all kinds of fruit and even oak trees were killed) it has produced a good paying crop. It is strictly Iron clad and almost entirely free from rust, blight and scab and lives through the winter in the most exposed places. PRICES , See Red Ink Prlc. List Enclosed.

4 MIDSUMMER FARM CATALOGUE

TURKISH RED Winter Wheat SECOND ONLY TO DEFIANCE

The best variety on the market except Defiance. Remember this is not a new or untried variety, as it has been grown in Iowa for twenty years and endured a temperature of 30 degrees below zero. It also stood more than 40 degrees below zero in Minnesota. It has never winter-killed except the season of 1898-99, when clover, grass, fruit and even oak trees winter -killed owing to the dry fall and the extreme cold weather without snow. Other years when the Fultz, Mediterranean, Michigan Amber, Harvest King, Poole, Russian Red and other varieties killed out very badly or rusted so as to be worthless, the Turkish Red came through in fine condition and yielded a bountiful crop. It is a big yielder. a sure cropper and there is no danger of its freezing out. It has given such excellent satisfaction in Minnesota that there they have renamed it the "Reliable Minnesota," or "Bearded Fife." Kernels are red and have a thin husk, very hard and rich in gluten. We believe that there is no other variety in existence except the Defiance that will give as good satisfaction in every respect, that will produce as large a crop under ordinary conditions, that will make as much good flour per bushel or weigh as heavy per stuck measure as the Turkish Red. IT YIEDLED FORTH-EIGHT BUSHELS IN INDIANA, and we believe under favorable conditions would do still better in other parts of the East. It is of strong growth with heavy, vigorous roots stooling out immensely and succeeds well on a great variety of soils. While we belive it will pay farmers to plant the best, still this will be found far superior to most of the seed wheat now on the market, and will doubtless please all customers. It is not as highly bred or as closely selected as Defiance, but the price is lower.

At the Nebraska State Experiment Station in fall of 1906 they sowed thirty-seven varieties of winter wheat; it all winter-killed except three; in 1898 they sowed over one hundred varieties and only five survived the winter in good condition. In 1899 they sowed forty-two varities. In all of these tests the Turkey Red succeeded finely and is given a first place on their list. It withstands the scab disease better than all others, is of best quality, yields best and is most satisfactory to grow. It pays to have the best. Don't risk doubtful sorts.

The Iowa State Experiment Station says that the Turkish Red Winter Wheat turned out exceptionally well, going through the winter without the slightest injury and yielding 55.3 bushels per acre. It outyielded all other eighteen varieties of winter wheat tested with it, the average yield of the eight bald varities in same test being only seventeen and one-third bushel per acre. Bessie Brown.

This is called by rose specialists the finest new variety which has been brought out for many years past. It is a hybrid tea variety which originated in England. Blooms are very large in size, full double and of perfect shape; color, creamy white flushed and tinged with pink, especially at the at the edges of the petals which are shell shaped. It was awarded eight prizes at the great English floral exhibition. Blooms freely; is of the sweetest fragrance, and is just the thing for wearing. Each 20c; two-year-old plants, each 35c.

Etoile de France.

This great French Rose well deserves its name, "Star of France." It makes a fine upright bush, has beautiful deep-green foliage, and the flowers, which are glorious in their form and fragrance, are borne with amazing profusion- in fact it is always in bloom. Large, massive, deep full, cup formed flowers are produced singly on long, stiff stems, while the color is absolutely new- clear red or crimson velvet, and the fragrance is exquisitely sweet. Yellow Cochet.

The cochets are the hardiest of the everblooming roses. They winter with only slight protection. The buds are peculiarly long and pointed and open into very large flowers. The color of this variety is deep sulphur yellow, and is generally accorded first place among yellow roses for outdoor planting by rose specialists. It makes a good plant, and bears abundantly. The success of the seed dealer depends on the success of his customers and in looking over our spring order it is pleasing to note that they not only averaged larger in size than previous years, but there were also far more of them than ever before. and we therefore most sincerely thank our customers for having given us the most prosperous season that we have ever had. The people have learned to have confidence in our Choice Iowa Seeds and know that they can be depended on. This small catalogue is sent to only a few of our customers whom we believe would be specially intereested in it, and we request that you thoroughly examine all parts of this brief list.

There are many things which can be planted to advantage in the fall and everyone who loves flowers should set out at least one bed of Dutch Bulbs for early spring blooming. They prolong the season of garden flowers about two months. They are also the main dependence for winter blooming in the house. Autumn is also a favorable season for making lawns and setting out strawberry plants.

There wlll be an immense demand for seed wheat this year owing to the fact that our special varieties of winter wheat have yielded so immensely during the past three seasons when compared to the older sorts. The average yield of wheat in this state for the past ten years has been only fourteen bushels per acre, but our improved Turkish Red Winter Wheat produced the wonderful, prodigious crop of SIXTY BUSHELS PEP ACRE lacking only twelve pounds. Just think of that for a crop; fifty-nine and four-fifths bushels per acre on a carefully measured field.

START RIGHT this year by purchasing our best Defiance Turkish Red Seed Wheat and prepare for a big crop in 1903. There will be a great call for it. Order early.

PERMANENT PASTURES Fall is undoubtedly THE season for sowing most kinds of grass seeds. Unless the weather is extremely dry they usually do better than when sown in the spring; they have the advantage of several months' growing weather, they come up early and vigorously in the spring and make a full crop the first year. Read our description of the various kinds and especially of our mixtures for permanent pastures and meadows and don't fail to try them this year.

We ship all heavy goods by freight by the most direct and cheapest route, unless otherwise Instructed Our prices in this catalogue include cost of bags for shipping in and delivering on cars at Des Moines. Purchaser pays tbe freight,but as wheat is shipped at fourth class and timothy and clover at third rates,the cost of transportation is small. Our terms are Cash with order. We refer you by permission to the Valley National Bank of this city, or to any commercial agency as to our responsibility. We do not care to make shipments C. O. D. unless at least one-third of the amount is sent with order as a guarantee of good faith. If you prefer, however, you can have your banker or some responsible merchant there guarantee payment and you can pay on arrival of goods. We prepay postage on plants and bulbs.

ABOUT WARRANTING. -We thoroughly test all our seeds and nothing is sent out that we do not believe to be good in every respect. Still, when it is considered how many are the contingencies on which the success of any crop depends, such as sowing too deep or too shallow, too wet or dry soil, unfavorable weather, insects, etc,our customers will readily see that it would be sheer folly for anyone to warrant them to grow and produce a perfect crop, and we want it plainly understood that while we exercise great care to have all seeds pure and reliable, and also true to name, we give no warranty express or implied.

Dwarf Essex Rape The great summer and autumn crop. Of comparatively recent introduction in this country, but has proved to be tbe MOST VALUABLE FORAGE PLANT IN EXISTEXCE for many sections of tho country. It is easily grown everywhere, can be sown early with a grain crop, but is usually sown in June or July in a field with corn or potatoes for summer or faIl pasture. Can be sown as late as September, as it is ready for pasturing in about a month after sowing. It produces a wonderful amount of feed. While it is the ideal food for sheep, still it is of equal value for hogs and cattle, as they are very fond of it, and it is extremely cheap, having yielded twenty tons of fodder per acre. It is well to make several sowings during the season. Can be sown in stubble after oats, wheat, etc., and makes a fine fall pasture.
