and once during the week, and the omission of
these accustomed services, so cherished and valued
seem like an innocation of our dearest privileges -
and particularly so now in this our hour of national
calamity when all the influences calculated to soften
the asperities of a man's nature and teach us to rely
not on man's strength and power should be brought
to bear. And what so well calculated to soften and
humiliate as our beautiful church services as
recorded in our Book of Comon Prayer? Frequent
and regular meetings of the congregation for united
invocation and [?] betoken an interest and
beget a sympathy which in our judgement can
not be as successfully attained in any other way
and you will pardon us for producing an illustra-
tion of this; the course of your lamented predecessor.
He found our church destitue of means & materials.
From a bankrupt congregation, cold and listless
audience, and emaciatedd Sunday School, and
general supinences pervading the whole
Church, he introduced warmth, activity
vigour. Seats heretofore vacant suddenly
