In Richmond Houstings Court, 15 December 1859 On the application of James Actor, a free man of color, emancipated since the year 1806, who desires to obtain permission to remain in this Commonwealth and reside in this City, it is ordered that the Justices of this Court be summoned to attend here on Friday next, to hear and decide on said application. Know all men by these presents that I Robert M. Briggs of Washington, Fayette County, in the State of Ohio. from motives of benevolence have manumitted and set free from slavery my negro man James Actor, now residing in Richmond in the State of Virginia, and I do hereby give, grant and release all my right, title and claim of, in, and to his person, labor and services and of, in, and to all the estate and property which he may hereafter acquire or obtain. Witness the following signature and seal, on this seventh day of July, in the year 1859 in the county and state aforesaid

Before me A E Silcott a Notary Public within and for the county of Fayette in the State of Ohio personally appeared on this seventh day of July AD 1859. Robert M. Briggs to me well known and acknowledged the signing and sealing of the above deed of manumission to be his voluntary act and deed. In testimony wherof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Notarial seal the day and year last aforesaid A. E. Silcott Notary Public in & for the County of Fayette & State of Ohio
