September 1st Recd letter from Clark Edson & co containing bill for Knickerbocker. April 1st. rdc from [I?] Lower, Bill for the 4 foreign Reviews taken there April 10th 1839. Rcd bill for Annuals o Education from Otis Borader & Co, Boston

April 17th A letter was sent By Mr. Brester, to Mrs Jemima Lewer, New York, enclosing $8.00 to pay for the reprints received from her.

April 21st. A letter was sent to Messrs Rawden & Bathc, Albany N.Y. requesting them to prepare 40 diplomas.

May 10th A letter wassent to Hon. Luther Braqdish, Moira, N.Y. requesting him to deliver an address at the time of the next annual celebration for the Philomathesian Society.

May 23d 1839. A letter waqs received from Hon. Luther Bradish, stating that he was under the disagreeable necessity of declining the invitation extended to him by the P.S.

June 1st 1839. A lteer was sent to Dr. Sprague Try, N.Y. requesting him to deliver a address before the P.S. at the time of its next annual celebration.

June 2nd 1839. Letter was sent by Mr. Johnson to Messrs Hardon & Balch requesting them to send on the diplomas by the said Johnson July 8th a letter was received from Hon Mr Lawrence informing us of his inability to comply with the request to address of the P.S at their Annual Celebration July 29 1840. A letter wassent to Mr Myron Lawrence Esq. resquesting him to address the Philomath Soc. at the annual celebration in August.

And, the said report was accepted by the society. Upon which, the following resolution was passed:

Resolved, that Gustavus V. Willard, a dishonable member of this society be expelled therupon; and that the Scribe be directed to give him a copy of this resolution. A copy of the above has been made and delivered, according to the above resolution.

The society adjourned till Saturday next, at two o'clock, P. M. Attest Jesse Gove, Scribe protem.

Saturday, 31st. Dec. 1803.

The society was opened pursuant to adjournment, the journals read & members called - Absentees, see P. I. the judicid committee made report. The Treasurer made report to the society on the state of the Treasury which was as follows:

"Statement Of the expenditures & revenue of the Philomathesian Society, during the service of A. Bingham, as treasurer pro tempore.

Expended by order of the Society, for a blank book $3.00.
do. for a trunk . . . 2.75.
Money rec.d into the Treasury . . . $7.91.
do. remaining in the Treasury . . . 1.95.
Money due the Treasury from the members 16.42.
This is a true statement, Attest, A. Bingham, Treasurer, protem."

Mr. Barney signified to the society, his desire of being dismissed; and, on motion of Mr. Conklings, it was ordered, that Mr. Barney be honorably dismissed. -

The disputants for this evening being absent, the question was postponed til the next meeting. The question for next evening is, "Are oaths of any use in legal proceedings?" [centered] Wednesday, 21st. Mar. 1804 The Society met, where the journal of last evening was read, and the members called. Absentees, see P. 6. The business of this evening was postponed to Friday evening next; and appointments made for the next stated session which SEE P. 6. On motion of Brother Smith, Messrs. James B. Gibson, and Salem Town were by vote of the Society, admitted as regular members thereof; and Brother Hall was directed to give them information. Brother Phelps was appointed to deliver a dissertation four weeks from this time; and Gove was excused till Ap. the fourth, next. Ordered, that the scribe make out and deliver Carlos A. Norton, formerly a member, an honorable discussion. The question for Wednesday next is, "Has infedelity a more dangerous tendency than superstition?" [centered] adjourned [centered] attest, Jesse Gove, Scribe. -- [centered] Wednesday, 23rd. Mar. 1804. The Society met & was opened, where the journal of the last evening was read, & the members called. Absentees see P. 6. Question 1st. Would an equal toleration of all religion be beneficial?

10 The disputants on this question having presented their questions were admitted to the debate, and a decision was had in the affirmative. Question 2nd. Are oaths of any use in legal proceedings? The disputants on this question, save Bingham, were abscent. The debate was commenced by Bingham (who presented a question) and continued by other members. The decision was in the affirmative. Brother Bingham read a dissertation. Asahel Clark, a member of the sophomore club, was proposed for admission as a member of this society, and was accepted. Mrss Gibson, Town, & Clark, having become members of this society, I have made out a list of their names & presented to the Treasurer. Adjourned Attest. Jesse Gove, Scribe

Wednesday, 28th Mar. 1804. The society was opened, the members called. Absentees see P. 6. The Jud. Com. made report. Brother Purdy read composition -- Smaley was excused. The disputants having presented questions, proceeded on the debate; and the question was decided in the negative, by yeas to nays --- Has infedility a more dangerous tendency than supertition?

Brother Davis was excused for the evening. Brother Hale represented to the society, that he had been charged by the Treasurer for two termbills which had become due durin[g] his absence, in the summer & fall of the year A.D. 1801, which bills he thought he aught not to be compelled to pay ; he wishes therefore, for the opinion of the Society on the questioned, which was granted : and the Society having considered the matter, ordered, that the bills as charged by the Treasurer should not be discharged or remitted. [top right corner] 11 had once been paid, and wished for the decision of the Society thereon: Whereupon, the Society appointed a committee of three members, to make inquiry into the matters by such members set forth, and to make report to the society thereupon. Brothers Smith, Bingham, and Hale were appointed the committee. The question for next evening is, Aught property to give the right of sufferage? Adjourned Att. J. Gove, scribe.

Wednesday, 4th. April. 1804. The soc[iety] was opened, the members called, and journal of last evening read. Absentees, see p. 6. SEE also appointments, p. 6. The Treasurer represented to the society; that there were several delinquents on his books, that they had not complied with his request of payment, by which he should become accountable, unless paid within ten days, that time being nearly lapsed, whereupon the soc[iety] granted a futher time, both to the Treasurer, an[d] to the delinquents, towit, 'till Wednesday next.

12. The question for next evening is, Does the virtuous man add more to the glory of God, than the vicious? On motion of Br. Gove, Col. John Chipman was admitted as an honorary member of this society, and the scribe was directed to give him information thereof. Adjourned-- Attest. Jesse Gove, scribe

April 9th, 1804 -- Then I made out, and delivered to Charles, Barney, "on his special request," a "certificate of membership and dismission", he the s[ai]d] Charles having been honorably dismissed by the soc[iety] on the 31st. of Dec[ember] last; and, at the same time, I also made out and delivered, according to a vote of the soc[iety] of the 21st March ult. an "honorable dismission" to Carlos A. Norton, the said Carlos having been dismissed sometime last summer. - Att. J. Gove, Scribe. -

Wednesday, 11th Ap[ril] 1804. The Society convened, was opened, and the members called.--- Absentees SEE. P. 6. The judicial committee made report. Brother Learned was excused for the evening. Br. Smith ws excused from reading composition this evening-- Br. Storrs read. Br. Coley was absent. -- The other disputants presented questions, and were admitted to the debate of the question for this evening ; and the question was decided in the negative. Ordered, that a futher time be given both to the Treasurer and the delingquents which he has mentioned, be granted, to wit, till the second metting of the next term. Ordered, that the vote which the society passed in the case of Brother Hale on the 28th ult. be reconsidered; whereupon, a committee of three members were ordered to inquire into the matter, and make report at the next evening -- Brothers Smith, Huggins & Gove, were appointed a committee on the order.- Ordered, that the judicial Committee make enquiry into the state of the treasury, when the Treasurer shall make report, at the close of the term. It was observed, that the volume of Travels by McKenzie, had been accepted by the prudential comittee -- whereupon Br. Bingham was appointed to return the thanks of the soc[iety] to Dr. Darius Mathews, the gentleman who presented the book. - The question for next evening is, Are men ever virtuous from selfish motives? [top right corner] 13 Wednesday, 18th. Ap[ril] 1804. The society convened, was opened, & the members called. Absentees, See, P. 6. The jud[icial] com[mittee] made report. Br. Hall was excused for the evening. The disputants presented their questions, and were admitted to the debate; and the question was decided in the affirmative by yeas and nays as follows:

Brother Bingham then read composition -- Br. Davis was excused from reading composition. The committee appointed to enquire into charges of the Treasurer against Br. Hale, said to have become due during his absences in the summer and fall of the uear 1801, Reported, "That having made due inquiry into the matter, are of opinion, that the two quarterbills which are charged to Th. E. Hale, for the summer and fall terms of the year 1801, ought to be remitted, or discharged; and, therefore offer the following resolution: Resolved, by the Philomathesian Society, that the two termbills charged to Br. Th. E. Hale for the summer & fall of 1801 be, and are hereby discharged. April 18th 1804.

Th. D. Huggins } W. D. Smith } ComJ. Cove- } mittee." The foregoing report was accepted by the Society, and the resolution passed into a law. The jud[icial] com[mittee] who on the last evening was ordered to make inquiry into the state of the treasury, beged leave to make report on Wednesday next, which was granted. Zera Smaley, on his request, and after interrogating the Treasurer whether any thing was due to the society, & finding nothing due, was honorably dissmissed. The society then adjourned-- Attest. J. 14. April 23rd. A.D. 1804. Then I made out and delivered to Zera Smaley, upon his special request, an honorable dismission from the the society, hearings date the 19th day of April instant, according to a resolution of the Society of the 18th, April instant. I have, also, according to a resolution of the society of the 4th, April, inst. given Col. John Chipman notice of his admission, into this Society, as an honorary member -- Attest, Jesse Gove, scribe.

Wednesday, 25th Ap[ril] 1804. The society met, was opened, and, after the members were called, the journals of the last evening was read. Absentees, see P. 6. The Jud[icial] Com[mittee] made report. The reading of Br. Phelps disputation was, by his request, postponed 'till the first meeting of the next term. The report of the Judicial Committee, who were directed to inquire into the state of the Treasury, requested leave to make report on Saturday next; which was granted, and a special meeting warned for that day.-- The Society proceeded to the appointment of Officers for the ensuing term, when the following persons wer[e] elected: Wm D. Smith, President;-- Jesse Gove, vice president; -- Calvin Noble, scribe;-- Wm Andrews, Librarian; -- Lyman Kipp, Treasurer; -- Th. E. Hale } Presidential Amos Bingham } Committee--- Salem Town, } Asahel Clark, one of the Jud[icial] Com[mittee] protempore. It was motioned, and carried, that the Treasurer have leave to draw money from the Treasury for the purchas[e] of a new book for the keeping of the Treasurer's accounts. Br. Hale was appointed to deliver a dissertation on the third meeting of the ensuing term. Adjourned.- Attest. Jesse Gove, Scribe.
