The Deposition of John Smith of Onslow County
being of full age Taken before me Thomas Johnston
one of the State Justices assigned to keep the peace
for the County of Onslw upon his Oath [???] and
Says that on the Twenty sixth Day of August [???] this
[???] was in camp in the Norwest Branch of
New River at which Time Capt Benjamin Williams on
[???] of [???] House came into camp and after they
Brakefasted the captain ordered his house to [???]
and after the soldiers had mounted their horses
Mr. Stephen Shackleford their Lieutenant mounted
and Robert Grisham one of his soldiers set on
his Horse in the sun and Mr. Shackleford said I
Command you to Keep your Ranks Grisham makes
answer by God I will not set in the sun for you
now no other Man Mr. Shackleford makes answer
I Command you to Keep your Rank and poised
his gun at the same Time with that Grisham
put him him self in a posture to fire as Mr.
Shackleford upon which Capt Williams ordered
Some of the men to Take hold of Grisham upon
whick they seized upon Grisham and immediately
Grisham Gun fired upon which Shackleford Gun
fired which he believes Killed the said Grisham
and that he believes that the Greatest part of the
company with their Lieutenant was much [???]
with [???] and further this [???] [???] [???]
sowrn before me this
5th of April 1782
