Miss L. Exum Clement, June 7, 1920.

My dear miss Clement,

My heartiest congratulations. On learning of your nominat ion, I at once wired you quoting Exodus Chap. XIV. v. 15.

It is a high compliment to the men of Buncombe, as well as to yourself, that you have been nominated before women were admitted to the polls.

Treacherously some party leaders combinded to prevent the ratification of the 36th State till after the Primaries were over. This alone saved Seantor Underwood and some other Senators from defeat.

It is entirely probable that the Governors of Connecticutt and Vermont will be forced to call sessions, and if not it is entirely probable that, the Democratic Party seeing the situation, North Carolina will ratify in July, but if these things do not happen I hope you will hold on and be/elected, for I know of nothing in the Constitution of North Carolina which renders woman ineligible to hold any office, and the legislature ,not any court, will pass upon your eligibility. See Alexander v. Pharr recently decided by this Court.

Hoping that Buncombe will have the honor of being represent ed by you, and again prove the title of the county to be the foremost in the State, I am

Most respectfully,

Malier Clark

got quite a lot of graft. Mrs. [?] had considerable luck, but will probably tear up her clothes in a month or two. Why will she tear around as if she were perpetually running for a train?

I'm very glad your father is better. But make him behave himself till he's clearly out of the woods.
