AMERICAN Y.M.C.A.
ON ACTIVE SERVICE WITH THE AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE
Sept. 8, 1918
Dear Mother:- I hardly know how to write a letter. There is lots of things I would like to tell but I will have to wait untill I get back. I have had some rich experiences already. I have traveled so much and seen so much beautiful scenery that I feel like I have seen every thing to be seen except Peace. I was in Paris once.
I am on detached service at present.

I am not with, nor near anybody I ever knew before I cam in the army, still I have friends where I am. I am at present on French rations and they are shorter than ours.
Write me all news and also send me the Fremont Messenger. Tell Ralph to look after selling my crops, and give you the proceeds.
Your devoted Son. Pvt. J.B. Exum Co.D. 306 Am. Tr. U.S.A. Po. No. 704 Am. Exp. Force. France.
