How I Grew My Tomatoes

I always had a desire to join the tomato club because I like to have money to spend, and Miss Bradford came to our school last Springs I joined.

I selected my plat beside the woods. It is a sandy clay about 66 feet square. I selected this place because papa had planted all the land except this place.

Sometime in March the soil was broke up with two horse plow, and then the wrose were laid off with a single plow. I used one thrid sack of 8-33 fertilizer, when I tans[?] planted my plants.

I hoed my tomatoes four times and had them plowed twice just after they begain to bloom the first.

time , and then when the tomatoes began to ripen.

Just before they begain to bloom I prunded them, but I did not stake them as it was too much trouble.

The only trouble I had with the insects was, the potatoe bugs got under the leaves were you couldn't see them hardly, and ate some of the leaves.

When my tomatoes began to ripen I picked them off and sold peks[?], and canned the rest of them.

I did some of my canning in glass as mamma had so many empty jars, and it was so unhandy to get to the canner.

I have learned a good many things about canning, one thing is to not fill your can too full and to be sure to have your tools for sealing hot and clean.

My account in pounds was 520 lbs, 145 lbs was used at home there was 14 lbs sould fresh, I canned 55 cans on the canner.

Cost of work was 90¢, the provid was $8.12.
