A journal of a voyage kept on board the Ship Marcus of Fair Haven Edward Osborn Master

Thursday October 14 1847 This day with gentle breezes and pleasant weather. At daylight took our anchor and got underway and stood out. At 10 AM discharged our pole & latter. Emploid [EMPLOYED] lashing the anchors and clearing up the deck. Choese [CHOSE] watches and boat crews.

Friday Octo [OCTOBER] 15 Me. S S With getle [GENTLE] breezes and pleasant weather steering S by E. All sail set. Employed in coiling lines and fitting boats. At 4 called all hands aft and choesed [CHOSE] watches. At 11 AM double reefed the topsails. Latter part more moderate. So ends. Latt [LATTITUDE] 39 ˓˓ 30

Saturday oct [OCTOBER] 16 With gentle breeses [BREEZES] and pleasant weather steering SSE all sail set. Employed in fitting boats and other duty. Middle part the same. Latter part strong breeses [BREEZES] steering by the wind.

Sunday oct [OCTOBER] 17 With strong winds from the ESE all sail set. Emploed [EMPLOYED] in ships duty. Stood mast heads. Middle part took in the light sails. Latt [LATTITUDE] 36˓˓26 Long [LONGITUDE] 67 ˓˓00

Monday 18 With strong breeses [BREEZES] frome the Eastard [EASTWARD] under double reef topsail steering ESE. Employed in ships duty. Latter part steering by the wind. Close reef the topsails. So ends the 24 hours. Latt [LATTIDUE] 35˓˓26

Tuesday Oct [OCTOBER] 19 With modrate [MODERATE] breeses [BREEZES] steerg [STEERING] by the wind to [AHEAD?] turned the reef out the topsail. Employ in ships duty. Brok [BROKE] out the after hold for [MEAT?] store. At 3 wore ship. At daylight pleasant and modrat [MODERATE]. At 10 AM saw same [BRERET?] [CORDAHET?] and [GOT?] [SOME?].
