July 4th 1861

4th July 1861. All this day fine breezes SSE. Pleasant. Passing
clouds. All sail by the wind. I think I have the trades at last.
Current South 12 miles. Few F. [FLYING] Fish. I expect strong trades for a
few days. The Glass is rising. A sure guide. 37 Days out.

5th July All this day fine breezes SSE. & pleasant. Passing clouds.
Getting along finely. A comit [COMET] in sight the 3 or 4 last evenings
in the NNW. Very bright. 38 Days out. & near the Line.

6th July All this day fine. Fresh trades SE by S. to SSE. Pleasant.
At 9 P.M. on the Equator. Long [LONGITUDE] 28°05. 38 Days 9 hours from Boston.
Latter part fresh breezes. Some sea. Unless the wind conts [CONTINUES] I cannot
fetch to windward of Fernando Naroma [FERNANDO NORONHA, BRAZIL]. Current 20 miles West.

7th July. All this day fine fresh Trades SSE. to SE. Pleasant.
Getting along finely. No Current this day. The wind
conting [CONTINUING] to the Eastward. 40 days out. & all well.

8th July All this day fresh trades E.S.E. Passing clouds & pleasant.
Royals in. F. [FLYING] Fish. Current West 36 miles. Well to windward
Fernando Narona [FERNANDO NORONHA, BRAZIL]. Gowing [GOING] along finely by the wind.
41 Days Out.

9th July All this day fresh trades ESE. to SE. Pleasant. Light sails in
by the wind. No free breezes for me. At 10 a.m. passed a
Schr[SCHOONER] stearing [STEERING] South by the wind. Current W 12 miles.
The comet in sight nights. It is bount [BOUND] South at a great rate

10th July All this day fresh trades & pleasant weather.
Light sails in. By the wind of course. No current.
The wind hangs obstantelly [OBSTINATELY] to the South. Expect it to
cont [CONTINUE] soon. -- The Comet still in sight bound south.

11th July All this day fresh trades & pleasant. Bad sea. Light sails
in. _____. _______. Current 20 miles West.
The wind hang far to the south. At 12 M. [MIDNIGHT] passed a N.Y.
Brig stearing [STEERING] North. 44 Days Out.

12th July First & middle fine breezes SSE. Pleasant.
Latter part South light cloudy. All sail by the wind of course.
I did not expect a South wind here. 45 Days Out.

13th July First part light airs S.S.E. & calm.
