x June 8. 1889. Mr. Dawson showed me the Nantucket
plants today in the shrubery of the Arnold
Arboretum, all growing and nearly in flower. He
said they proved to be true V. molle. M.L.O.

It may be that the patch seen by Mr. Dawe and
the one that Miss Tallant found were the same. Miss
Tallant died in 1877.

Mr. Jackson Dawson went to Nantucket in Sept. [SEPTEMBER] 1888
to get plants of Viburnum molle for the Arnold Arboretum,
He really found all that he wanted of out plant, but he seemed
to doubt whether the shrub was the true V. molle, or a variety of
V. dentalium. His great familiarity with the shrubs and trees of N. America
in all the varieties and forms that can be obtained, adds value to his
opinion, but from the description in the Manual, one would pronounce
our plant V. molle. It is not "smooth"; it has "stellate pubescence"; the
seed (in my specimen) are not " deeply excavared". See above x
