The stoppage of trade between the United States and England has brought great distress Poorer class of people in England, Ireland and Scotland. And also it has a great stagnation in the United States and caused many failures with Banks, and Merchants throughout the Government. Many, very many, who were considered wealthy and [STAINED?] a good standing have failed.
All this difficulty and distress both in Great Brittain [BRITAIN] and America is generally believed to arise from the 'Corn Law' in England, which is a heavy duty laid on all foreign Corn, or Grain which is done to increase the price of the produce of the products of the land in England.
Trade being stopped, it caused the Factories to stop manufacturing, and indescribable distress was brought on the laboring poor, have no work their wages stopped, by reported accounts it appears the cries of the poor for want of bread is proclaimed through streets by thousands, many have already starved to death, and the number daily increases, at present no relief appears.
Whereas if Brittain [BRITAIN] would repeal the Corn Law & open a free trade with America, their factories would immediately get into operation, and the United States would Ship out Corn, Wheat, & other products of this country, that is now stored in abundance for want of a Market.
It would undoubtedly relieve England or the poor and middle classes of the people. It would also relieve the people of the U.S. who are now loaded with heavy debts, and in no way to discharge them according to the present state of things.
Great complaint is daily heard for want of Money or a circulating medium. And no Market for the produce of the country.
The distress is so great in England, there is great talk of an Insurrection or an Outbreak, which no doubt would be dreadful in its effects.
The ruling part of the people are the Aristocracy, where the strength of the Government depends.
