Here is what I can remember of 6 June 44

I woke up about seven o'clock and someone
said the invasion is on. I didn't believe him
and said, oh go back to sleep. Then, someone
turned the radio on + General Eisenhower
was speaking. Then we knew it was real.
Of course we were all anxious to fly that
day, as never before.
We probably talked about what it must
be like and about who would fly the
missions that day. Soon the flights for
the day were posted. My name was on it.
Everyone returned safely.
There was a second mission that day,
but I wasn't on it.
The day before the invasion there was no flying in
our group.
someone had been been down to the flight line
and they said the airplanes were being painted with
white stripes. No one paid too much attention. We
just figured it was some sort of camoflague. Of
course, as we all know now, all the allied planes
were painted so they could be readily identified from
the enemy.
