I am coming across quite a few transcriptions in this collection that are just random letters/symbols/numbers. Some of them have some of the document transcribed correctly but with random errors sprinkled throughout so I am better off just erasing the existing transcription and starting over. Not sure why this would be happening.

Hi jmphillips, thanks for contributing to the project! The errors and random characters in starting transcripts are the result of computer text recognition. All of the documents undergo this process before being uploaded. The software we use does a decent job identifying typed characters, however errors are likely and handwritten text cannot be accurately transcribed. Sometimes these errors can be corrected by editing the original transcript. In other cases it makes more sense to start from scratch as you suggested.
