before dark when we anchored to seaward of the merchant
ships and stood by to defend them from surface attack
during the night. As it happened, no attack was made
on our part of the line.
Our finest hour? Daylight on 6 June, to see the
troopships and craft of every sort steaming safely down
the channel we had swept and to receive from the
Admiral in the leading ship the signal.
