In the 13th C france was a center for the production
of small MSS Bibles which were probably designed for
private reading or university study. The so-called Paris
text of the Vulgate was established around 1220
perhaps on the initiation of Parisian stationers.
The greatest success of the Paris text was in its
canonical order and in its revision of chapter
divisions (often attributed to Stephan Langton
Moreover, the Paris text became the standard
for printed Bible editions when Gutenberg, it
seems used it. Gutenberg's text was followed
with few emendations until critical editions
began to appear in teh 16th C.
