My Dear Mr Park

I have your package & have read that Dr. of Indi ana the letters with great in terest. I do not remember to have seen that paper since I was engaged in mailing several hundred of them after the thirty five had gone. I well remember now Asah Smith came down from the Seminary & remonstra ted with me. I dont feel quite satisfied with the time which your history gives to the affair. And yet I can see that my letter is largely responsi ble for the comical aspects of the case as you have caught them. I do wish I could have

concocted it with you. It is impossible for you to under stand those times or the signifi cance of what occured. If I think of a form of foot note such as you speak of which will put the matter nearer the truth of history, I will send it.

That story about the "monument harder than brass," belongs [X] to Prof Kingsley & certainly does not belong to Mr Johnson. I say in my paper that his replies more like that of Prof. Kinglsey in this case. I would not allow that to stand as it is, Sherlock Bristol who was expulled was no "boy" - but a mature, cool, determined man

who knew exactly what he was about. Dr Thayer & Dr Langworth, represent the opposite parties & the feeling which this seem excited in different observers. Dr. L. does not do justice to Bristol nor Dr T. to Mr Johnson. Mr J was feeble & nervous & seemed more agitated than he really was.

If the boy you refer to was the one expelled for "speaking the price" your account will and a little change. I have a suspicion that Prof. Baldwinis in error about that, & has Bristols' care in mind. I think I know something about the incident Prof. B. refers to

Dr L's story about the student sent back by his father I think is incorrect also. I do not think Dr Thayer is right about Indian Ridge X tho' I am ^not

sure. I think it was in the grove back of Prof. Phelp's.

The fact is, the whole out break was a very important event in the opening of the great conflict which cloud in war. Its results have proved to be more important than ever the rebels suspected.
