woman should ever be left alone with even a small group of chil-
dren, so the teacher-pupil ratio was unduly high. The director of
this lower school had her office in a corner of the campus and
spent much time on the road visiting her scattered charges.

During the hectic first days of the "Blitz," Mr. John Nelson
had set up his office equipment on President Shepard's lanai and,
for a few weeks, this was the center of school relations with the
army. As soon as possible, however, a three-room structure was
built near the Alexander Street gate, and throughout the war it
served as business office and quarters for Mrs. Slingerland,
director of pre-school groups.
