[office stamp top left corner] COLONIAL SECRETARY'S OFFICE QUEENSLAND 3221 19 NOV. 66

[Written at top] Commissioner of Police

Report upon Mr Watterstons application to be reinstated.

Police Department Brisbane 17th November 66

Sir

I have the honor to return Mr Watterston's letter forwarded to me for my report thereon.

I have already had the honor to bring Mr. Watterston's conduct, with regard to the cheque given by him to Mr. Wilson, under your notice. Mr Wilson's version of the transaction differs very much from that given by Mr. Watterston and I have no means of learning which is the correct one; but the fact remains that Mr. Watterston gave a cheque on a bank in which he had no funds.

I have very good reason to believe

The Hon The Colonial Secretary

[written in left margin] Inform Mr. Watterston that the Col Sec'y has received the report of the Commr. of Police upon the circumstances attending his dismissal from the Service, and that under that report the CP. is unable to reinstate Mr Watterston [initialled] A.W.M.

believe that Mr. Watterston must have known that his chance of obtaining money to meet this cheque, was, as far as his "friend" in Brisbane was concerned, very slight; as I am aware that at this very time he was negotiating with Mr. Cribb, through a friend, for an advance on his pay for the months of September and October. Mr. Cribb now holds an order for this pay and Mr. Watterston has also given orders for the same pay to two other persons.

As to the treatment of his children I am unable to say whether his tale is correct or not. It appears to be a most unlikely one, however, it was not on that account that his dismissal was recommended.

I have the honor to be Sir Your most obedient Servant

[signed] D.T. Seymour C.P.
