To meet the requirements of the Burke District [?] has recommended that Sub Inspector Coward be appointed to take charge of the Police Force already stationed there and that he be authorized to supplement his number by an acting Sergeant and three men to be provided by the Commissioner with power also to select on the spot eight native Troopers.

Sir

I have the honor to return here with Mr. Landsborough's letter on the subject of police protection in the Burketown district. I have also received a report from Sub Inspector Uhr very similar to that addressed by Mr. Landsborough.

On Tuesday next Sub Inspector Coward leaves this for Bowen there to wait arrival of a vessel bound to Burketown from Sydney

Mr Coward takes with him an acting Sergeant and three constables also equipment for eight
