POLICE DEPARTMENT, COMMISSIONER'S OFFICE BRISBANE, 4th. July 1883.

Steam Launch "Vigilant" can be dispensed with

Sir,

With reference to your minute on the report of my visit to the North in which you request me to inform you as to the advisability of doing away with the Police steam launch "Vigilant" so far as Police Work is concerned, I have the honor to state that since settlement has opened along the northern coast so rapidly as it has done of late, and steam communication is becoming so frequent, the services of the "Vigilant" can with advantage be dispensed with, in fact I should prefer that the Native Police detachment under Sub-Inspector Douglas be immediately transferred on shore, where it can perform the duties for which it is intended, whereas now the troopers act as seamen, and owing to the steam launch having been chiefly occupied in carrying passengers the detachment has not been of use in patrolling the district.

I have the honor to be Sir, Your most obedient Servant [signed] D. T. Seymour. Commissioner of Police

The Honorable The Colonial Secretary

[written in left margin] Can the Port Master find employment for the "Vigilant" [signature] B/C 10 July 83

The "Vigilant" would be of great use to this [Div'n?] [initialled] GM? ?????? 1/01[?]/8?
