[written at top] E.W. Palmer Removal of Police Detachment from Carl Creek to Nicholson River

Brisbane 16th Jany. 1884

To the Honorable the

Colonial Secretary, Brisbane

Sir,

Mr Seymour has been asked to remove a detachment of Police from Carl Creek on the Gregory river to a place on the Nicholson river, where they will have a better opportunity of inspecting travelling cattle going to Port Darwin, and he says he required almost £200 to carry out the movement, and is desirous of having your sanction and that amount. He has no objection himself, and has been asked by many in the district to shift one of the detachments now at Carl Creek for the purpose stated.

I have been asked by the residents about Burketown to try and have all travelling cattle inspected previous to their leaving Queensland territory. Last year 30,000 head of cattle passed, and the same number for 1882 and I know myself that lots of station cattle are picked up and taken on over the border, as well as horses. Every station along the road pays tribute in the way of a few head to each travelling mob, and if we have a brands inspector he ought to be placed where he can do his work; he is too far away at Carl Creek to inspect any cattle bound for Adelaide territory. I hope you will see fit to grant the amount.

I remain

Yours faithfully

[signed] Edwd. Palmer
