[in top left embossed stamp] COLONIAL SECRETARY'S OFFICE QUEENSLAND / No. 4834 / JUL 11 1884

Police

Queensland.

POLICE DEPARTMENT,

COMMISSIONER'S OFFICE,

BRISBANE, 11th July 1884.

Sir,

I have the honor to forward the Estimate of the probable expenditure of this Department for the financial year 1884 - 5.

You will observe that under "Clerks" there ia an additional £150 to provide for Mr. Chapman who has recently been appointed in this office; and I would venture to recommend that £25 be added to the next item, to bring Mr. Armour's salary to the same rate as Mr Chapman's, Mr Armour being nearly two years and a half a clerk in this office, and fully deserving the increase.

Fifty additional constables will be required to meet the increased demand for Police protection throughout the Colony.

Under Contingencies the following alterations will be necessary viz:-

Provisions, Fuel and Light for watch houses ; and Conveyance of constables and prisoners. Under both these heads the amounts placed on the Estimates last year will not suffice ; in fact in the former the expenditure has already been exceeded by £400.

Forage Expenses : - Owing to the high price of forage.

forage the expenditure under this head during last year has exceeded the vote by £1000 an additional £1300 will at least be required for the next twelve months seeing what little prospect there is of the price of forage declining.

Allowance in lieu of rations, outside Districts:- the expenditure last year will have exceeded the estimate (£2500) by more than £400. It will therefore be necessary owing to the increasing number of stations in the outside districts to provide £3000 this year.

Rations to Native Troopers and Trackers:- The amount to meet this expenditure may safely be reduced by £300.

Rent and allowance in lieu of rent:- The total amount paid for rents at present is £1497 : 16/. It will therefore be necessary to provide this year an additional £500.

Medical attendance and Medicines:- £200 will suffice this year. I have therefore reduced this item by £100.

Fencing Police Paddocks:- There is a large number of Police paddock reserves throughout the Colony which require fencing ; and if this is done saving in forage could be effected. Last years vote (£ 500) has been overdrawn to the extent of £252: 17: 0. I have inserted £1500 for the current year, and hope that The Honorable The Colonial Secretary will see his way to approve of the increase which I am satisfied is urgently needed and will be well accounted for.

I have the honor to be, Sir,

Your most obedient servant.
