POLICE DEPARTMENT,

COMMISSIONER'S OFFICE,

BRISBANE, 20th. July 1885.

Sir,

I have the honor to report with reference to Mr. Douglas' letter, herewith returned, recommending that Police should be placed at Simpson's Bay for the protection of the Telegraph construction party, that a detachment stationed either at this or any other point would be of very little use except while the party is at work in the neighbourhood. The best way to protect the working party would be to have a detachment of Police travelling with them and the officer in charge of the Police ought to have power to control the contractor's men in so far as relates to their dealings with the aborigines. The contractor should also be bound to erect, remove and maintain suitable tents and camp equipage for the Police and to provide them with rations according to a fixed scale.

The question of a permanent station could be determined later on.

The Honorable The Colonial Secretary.
