Sir The petition of the undersigned Susan Arundell is most respectfully presented for your favourable consideration. That on Friday the 21st. Feby. 1889 my husband William Arundell was a Constable of Police and acting C.P.S. in charge of Watsonville Station and whilst riding on duty on that date his horse fell with him and Killed him instantaneously by striking him on the forehead with one of his hoofs. I am now left a widow almost destitute with three little children the eldest of which is only five years of age. My husband was in the service for over seven years and his conduct during that time was that of a steady reliable man which can be substantiated by referring to his defaulter sheet or to Inspector Stuart. I am aware that he was not long enough in the service to entitle him to a pension, but I trust you will take my sad case into consideration and grant me such a gratuity as may enable me to start some business by which I can support myself & children. I have the honor to be, Sir Your humble Servant A Arundell
