Colonial Secretary's Office Brisbane 19 March 1862

Sir

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 7th instant covering an account rendered by Dr Robertson for professional attendance on you in consequence of your shot wound and requesting its liquidation by the Government on the ground that the injury was sustained while in the discharge of duty. In reply I beg to inform you that under the circumstances of this case you will be relieved of this debt to Dr Robertson which will be discharged by the Colonial Treasurer.

With regard to your subsequent application for employment in some other branch of the Public Service as you are incapacitated for the active duty of the Native Police, I am directed to inform you that as it is ascertained you are at present temporarily employed in the Customs Department at Brisbane as a supernumerary Clerk, the Government will approve the retention of your services in that Department and will for the present permit you to continue in the receipt of your salary as a second Lieut. of Native Police, in lieu of the smaller pay usually given to Clerks supernumerary.

I have &c (signed) A.W. Manning

Lieut Patrick N.M. Police, Customs Office
