Colonial Secretary's Office Brisbane 8 April 1862

No. 62/228

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your two letters dated respectively the 28th & 31st March, the former applying for appointment as Secretary at the Head Qrs of the Native Police the latter seeking the appointment of C. P. S. at Nanango render'd vacant by the demise of Mr William Smith. In reply, I am directed to inform you that it is not in the power of the Government to confer either of the above appointments upon you, the first because it is deem'd unnecessary to nominate any one specially to a duty hitherto readily discharged by the Officers from time to time at Head Quarters, the second because a prior applicant had obtained the promise of such appointment and has since received it.

I am to express to you the regret of the Executive that circumstances render them at present unable to meet your wishes. They are fully aware that the nature of the injury you received while in the discharge of your duty renders you, for the present at all events, unfitted for active employment and desirous of affording you the means of obtaining medical attendance for your relief, they have decided on granting you leave of absence on full pay until such time as they shall be able to make application to
