Colonial Secretary's Office Brisbane 2nd January 1863
[Noted in margin: Papers Returned]
63. 5
Sir,
I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your lettter, dated the 16th ultimo, in further reference to the subject of your removal from the Native Mounted Police, and requesting that the Government will confer some other appointment upon you.
In reply, I have to inform you that the Government cannot interfere. While holding the place of Cadet you were merely on probation, and your subsequent confirmation or promotion rests entirely with the Commandant who, being held responsible, is justified in removing any Cadet whom he may not consider sufficient
The Government regrets the circumstances but have it not in their power to do anything for you
I have &c (Signed) A.W. Manning
Horace Ramsay Esqre
