Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 2nd Instant reporting your return to Head Quarters and giving a general Summary of occurrences during your tour of inspection, and referring specially to measures adopted for the proper patrolling of the Nogoa and adjacent country; also covering Lieut: Cave's report of his own proceedings while following the tracks of the murderers of Mr Wills & party. The Government notice with satisfaction the active measures adopted by yourself in the dispersal of all your available force in the disturbed Districts, but I am specially directed to request you will convey to Lieut: Cave the unqualified approbation of the Government of the untiring zeal and energy he has displayed under circumstances which have clearly shewn him to be a most efficient officer, and the Government feel assured that his services will be properly appreciated by those whose interests have in a great measure been entrusted to him.
