Colonial Secretary's Office Brisbane. 4th January 1862

62/22

Sir,

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 9th ultimo on the subject of the augmentation of the Native Police Force stationed in the Kennedy District in order that adequate protection may be afforded to the settlers by the formation of small companies in certain positions named in your letter, and further urging the reinstatement of Lieutenant Powell and his continuance in command of the 5th Division of the Native Police bearing testimony to that officers zeal and ready cooperation in every measure for the foreseable good. With respect to the first matter touched upon, I am directed to state that the Government are not at present prepared to sanction the increase of the Native Police in the manner suggested in your letter but the subject will be taken into consideration when the entire question of Police is under notice for the framing of the Estimates, ???

With regard to the reinstatement of Lieut. Powell I am to restate that the Government under the very favourable report given by you are ready to recall their dismissal of that officer and will continue him in his present command. You will not have forgotten that your own most unfavourable report had much weight in determining[?] the Government to disperse with Lt. Powell's services, and, they trust that the cordiality and good understanding you[?] apparently established will not again be disturbed to the detriment of the public service.

I have, &c (Signed) A.W. Manning

G.E. Darymple Esqre C.C.L. Port Denison
