Colonial Secretary's Office Brisbane, 11 March 1862
No 62/209
Sir,
The Commandant of Native Police having in the proper discharge of his duty, reported to the Government your misconduct on a recent occasion while in a state of intoxication, and your consequent suspension from duty pending the decision of the Government. I am directed to inform you that His Excellency the Governor in Council, accepting your apolegy [sic] and relying on your promise of proper conduct for the future has been pleased to direct your reinstatement. I am however to convey to you the severe displeasure of the Government at conduct so discreditable to you as a gentleman and so injurious to the interests of the Service to which you are attached. The Government however trusts that though at the outset of your official career you have so sadly forgotten yourself, you will take advantage of the opportunity now afforded you of evincing a desire of retrieving a

a reputation recklessly injured and that by gentlemanly conduct and implicit obedience to the commands of your superior Officer, you will show that the trust of the Government is not misplaced.
You will at once place yourself under the orders of the Commandant.

T.J. Westby Esq. Cadet in Native Police Rockhampton
