[Red writing] Recommending an increase of Native Police pay viz Corporals 30/- Troopers 20/- Recruits 13/6 per month, the increased pay to be only given to [???] boys

* [???] H P Paterns

Police Department Cooktown 31 May 1897

Sir Re Last paragraph of your minute on paper 97-5III Cook in which you compare Native Police pay with what good black boys can earn on stations or other work - I have the honor to point out that £1 per month to Native Police Corporals + 13/6 per month to ordinary troopers is a very low rate of wage - Many of the Corporals + Troopers do wonderful work and should be worth more than there present rates of pay.

Recommend Corporals receive £1-10 + Troopers £1- monthly - Recruits 13/6 if you approve of this they will be very pleased + considering the work they do

The increased pay to be only given to old tried boys _ recruits & short service boys, who have not proved themselves of exceptional value, to receive the old rate of 13/6 _
