Sir

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 10th Instant, and in reply to state that I have hitherto refrained from reporting on Mr Corfield's letter respecting the Conduct of Sergt Brown inasmuch as I myself at the request of the Honourable The Attorney General had to proceed to Gigoom to hold a Magisterial Investigation into the Cause of death of the two Aboriginals lying dead in that Vicinity, and as to whom suspicion had attached to Brown -

The Inquiry was held by me on the 15th Instant and I conceive that under the circumstances the best report I could furnish you with would be a copy of the evidence taken on that occasion, [on right] which

which I now forward under separate cover, of course it was incompetent for me as a Justice of the Peace to call upon Brown for a statement in reply to the Charges made against him, as he was suspected of having committed a felony - and had he been arrested every word either uttered or penned by him would have been used against him, but on my return from Gigoom he sent me in a report which I also transmit with the above papers -
