My dearest Mother
You will be very much alone this week - nobody but the Bird.
I am looking forward to seeing Anna to-morrow. Yesterday I managed to find time to go to Tom's wedding & saw Maud, who said that Anna liked St Abbs'. I hope it will be a success. Uncle & Aunt were at the wedding, Uncle

in a pair of wonderful shepherd's tartan breeks. It was a hot & rather dreary function, but I rather liked the look of Tom's wife.
I have had a hard week of frivolity. On Tuesday I went to dine & sleep with Lord Stamford, my client - a rather pleasant visit. We went for a long walk in wonderful woods. On Wednesday I went to Lucy Lyttelton's birthday

party - and we all went on to Earls' Court. Raymond was there, & Archie Gordon, a son of Aberdeen's, & Lord Compton & [?Brooke], & Susie Grosvenor. It was a very pleasant friendly party.
Lord Cowper died on Wednesday & Bron Herbert is now a peer & a very rich man. I see from the paper that Lord Milner came to England last night.
I see the Goverment has been defeated. I wonder if Mr Balfour will dissolve. I hope he

will, for it is quite time that this Government came to an end.
I hear that Father & the Mhor spend all day tramping the hills at Peebles. I hope they will be the better for the change, & that you are keeping well & not moping.
Much love to all
Your affectionate son
John
