My dear old Mother
I got safely here yesterday morning after quite a pleasant journey. I got a good sleeping car at Berwick & slept peacefully to King's Cross. Yesterday I had a busy day with the index to my book & with writing leaders for the

'Spectator'. Harold departed for the Asquiths in the morning. In the evening a friend of J. Monro's, whom he asked me to see came to tea.
I dined, as I generally do when alone, with Lionel Phillips, & we went to the Alhambra & looked at the biograph of the French fleet – a dreary

amusements. L.P. is growing very sad & sentimental as the time of his departure approaches.
This morning I had 3 teeth pulled out to show there was no ill-feeling. I took the gas like a saint and slumbered peacefully. I felt no effect of any sort. I am to have two more taken out next week.
I am just off to the

Malcolms to dine & sleep. I have my eye on a bracelet -watch for you, which I think is the kind of thing you want.
I shall be up on Saturday by the same train as last week i.e. 7.48 at Reston, but I may have to go to Edinburgh for the day, in which case I shall send you a wire on Friday.
Much love
Your affectionate son
John
