My dear old Nan

Many thanks for your letter. It made me feel very unhappy to think that while I am wandering the high seas and highways of the world my poor old sister should be a "blighted being" at home. Drastic steps must be taken of some sort. I have been thinking a lot about it, but it is rather difficult. You see I am going to be in for a

great press of work during the next 3 or 4 months – in fact, I look forward to being "baffled" & reduced to the normal condition of my Aunt Agnes. There is no chance of my getting away at least till the middle of August when a week or 10 days in Switzerland might be possible. Failing that I think I might get a little time in October. idea of preaching. So if you can find a nice house remember I am quite willing to give Mother £50 towards the cost of it. If you can get either fishing or climbing in the neighbourhood I will try & come up for week-ends. Is there nothing anywhere in Peeblesshire or Selkirkshire?

The Clapham people can't be going away till July, so you can surely come up to town in June & we will study the state of dramatic art.

in October (I believe it is rather nice then), or anywhere else you like. You must have a holiday somewhere & somewhen. I am afraid I am rather an unsatisfactory brother, but the cares of this world sit heavily on me just now. The only compensation is that busyness means more money.

I am very sorry to hear about Father's continued aphasia. He should see a doctor at once. Tell poor old Mother not to worry. I do hope her health is better.

I came down here on Saturday & go back to town tomorrow. I got a touch of fever as soon as I arrived & had to go to bed & be dosed by Mrs Phillips with quinine. I spent yesterday in a luxurious bedroom, but I am better to day.

Much love to you

John
