Dear Mr Murray
I thought I might as well write and tell you that I haven't got the Stanhope. I do not feel disappointed, for after all it was very much of an experiment on my part. I think I shall very probably write again for it next year; the subject is "Sir Walter Raleigh" and I shall have more time to give to it.
You will be now in the middle of

your summer class lectures. I hope you are keeping well. You once told me, I think, that you stood heat best. I wish I could say the same, for the weather for the last week here has been tropical. I have found it very hard to work except in the early morning. Mods work I find takes up most of my time, and any hours I have had to spare have been given to finishing the typing of

my big story. It is almost ready, and I expect to send it off in about a week's time.
I do hope you have good news of Carlyon. It seems such a disgrace that it should lie idle when the stage is so cumbered with trash.
With kind regards
Yours very sincerely
John Buchan
